Review of My Last Read

I'm torn on this one. On one hand, it was a page turner with an easy style that draws you along, and it did have unsettling and tense moments that pull you in deeper. Yet, despite the unique fungal threat (The Last of Us notwithstanding) it soon took on the routine familiar in zombie tales. Some good character builds and linkages, but I found myself pushing to get through while craving an original fright and way ahead, which unfortunately wasn't delivered. Still, it's an easy and diverting tale with tension if no true, chilling horror and only suffers from want of being little bit better. ⭐⭐⭐

Review of My Last Listen

I picked the audiobook because I was intrigued by the title and the highly respected editor and was hooked by the introduction's premise of sword and sorcery. According to wikipedia, "Sword and sorcery (S&S) or heroic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy characterized by sword-wielding heroes engaged in exciting and violent adventures. Elements of romance, magic, and the supernatural are also often present. ... Sword and sorcery tales eschew overarching themes of "good vs evil" in favor of situational conflicts that often pit morally gray characters against one another to enrich themselves, or to defy tyranny." While certainly many of the stories fit at least loosely in this definition, I have a different ideal of S&S which is grittier than many of these stories. That said, it was a fantastic anthology of well-written, engrossing fantasy tales with stellar narration. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended if you're looking for a good, diverting listen. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
